Cultivating Community

What does Community look like in the 21st century? What’s needed so we all can thrive? What inspires us to work together & build a better future, even when times are tough? As technology impacts culture & society crystallizes around new systems, how can we keep our perspective fresh in a commitment to a good life for all?

Britta Riley (she/they) is a social practice artist, exhibition designer, social entrepreneur, educator, & community organizer from the richly diverse but often conflicted city of Houston, TX. Her background in journalism and user-centered exhibition design and her roles in the open-source & commoning movements inform her art practice of activating public participation and mass collaboration. Her work deals with community, cultural movements, ecosystems, all things public, and the use of one’s free time. MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the American Museum of Natural History (NY), NPR, The New York Times, ARTNews, Art in America, Ars Electronica, The Venice Biennale of Architecture, and TED have featured her work with many communities across five continents.
